Voting for the Pigs

picture of pigs

While this incentive may seem ludicrous now, in the 1890 Congressional race in New Hampshire, citizens who voted for a particular candidate were given a live pig. The sentiment behind the gift pig in 1890 is the same one that continues to motivate political candidates today: encouraging voters to leave the sty and come to the polls.

Since May, local individuals and groups like the Hollis Conservation Commission, the Land Protection Study Committee and the Trustees of Beaver Brook, along with our Town Selectmen, have been seeking input and advice from legal counsel and outside sources, to determine a reasonable course of action to protect our lovely town.

Report on Apportionment

Keep up to date on Apportionment Review Committee news at www.sau41.org/hbcsb-home.

Bill Matthews gave a presentation on apportionment at the Hollis Democrats monthly meeting on May 27, 2014. Matthews is a citizen representative to the Apportionment Review Committee, which was formed by the Hollis Brookline Cooperative School Board after the town votes of March 2014. Apportionment, the division of the tax load between the two towns of the Cooperative School District, was a contentious topic at the March meetings. The Apportionment Review Committee was formed to investigate the issues and make a recommendation to the Cooperative School Board.
