July 2018 Meeting: Wordsmithing 101

Go-Vote-graphic-300x155Roughly 100 days prior to the November elections, the Hollis Democrats will be hosting our Get Out the Vote Kickoff with Dr. Frederic Schaffer, Professor of Political Science at UMass Amherst.  Dr. Schaffer has worked as an election specialist in Iraq and Haiti, and his publications include Democracy in Translation: Understanding Politics in an Unfamiliar Culture, Elections for Sale: The Causes and Consequences of Vote Buying, and The Hidden Costs of Clean Election Reform.

Republican politicians now typically speak of “death tax” rather than estate tax and “personalizing” social security rather than privatizing it. Phrases like “death tax” and “personalizing social security” have been carefully manufactured in word labs using Madison Avenue techniques. Join us on Tuesday, July 24th at 6:30pm at the Lawrence Barn to learn how partisan wordsmiths craft language to persuade you, how you can identify it, and what questions to ask when you hear it. As usual, we’ll start with a Chat & Chow social with the program commencing at 7:00pm. We’ll wind down the evening with any candidate updates.
